Affiliated Laboratories® is a lab designed by a surgeon for surgeons.

Since opening its doors in 2006, Affiliated Laboratories® understands the clinical impact of a microscopic diagnosis and has processed over a half-million skin biopsies. We offer diagnostic expertise and unparalleled service in the evaluation of dermatologic disorders ranging from routine to the most difficult cases. Accredited by the College of American Pathologists, our carefully designed system is focused on serving the dermatopathology needs of all providers who perform skin biopsies.

Affiliated Laboratories® was ranked 8th in the country (source: Laboratory Economics), for private dermatopathology laboratories. As one of a few private CAP-accredited dermatopathology labs in the nation, we have several fellowship-trained dermatopathologists who are experts in skin disease and specializing in skin cancer, particularly melanoma. We have a quick turnaround time and will express diagnoses however, the clinician prefers.

Sarah I. Estrada, MD, FCAP

Laboratory Director & Dermatopathologist

Dr. Estrada is a full-time dermatopathologist. Dr. Estrada received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and her medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine where she graduated as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She completed an Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency and served as Chief Resident at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. She completed a Dermatopathology Fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Dr. Estrada is board certified in Dermatopathology, Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Department of Pathology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Clinical Education at Midwestern University. She also acts as a consultant pathologist for companies involved with pharmaceutical clinical trials as well as melanoma gene expression profiling. Her professional memberships include the American Medical Association, the American Society of Dermatopathology, the International Society of Dermatopathology, the College of American Pathologists and Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

Dr. Hemella Sweatt, MD

Dermatopathologist

Dr. Hemella L. Sweatt, MD is a board-certified dermatopathologist with over 25 years of diagnostic expertise, specializing in complex skin disorders and alopecia. She currently serves as a Dermatopathologist at Affiliated Dermatology, bringing a wealth of experience from prestigious institutions including Quest Diagnostics and Emory University Hospital. Dr. Sweatt completed her dermatopathology fellowship and residency in anatomic pathology at Emory, where she also served as Chief Resident. She earned her medical degree from Howard University and holds a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Duke University, with additional graduate work in paleontology and photobiology.

Dr. Sweatt’s academic contributions include peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters in dermatopathology, and she has presented her research at national medical conferences. She is a member of the American Society of Dermatopathology and the College of American Pathologists. Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Sweatt is deeply committed to service and education, having served on the Board of Trustees for Cincinnati Country Day School and as a board member for Envision Children. She also volunteers in her community through outreach programs and is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. With a meticulous diagnostic approach and compassionate patient focus, Dr. Sweatt is dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of skin disease.
