Hyperhidrosis

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that causes excessive sweating. It is estimated that 2%- 3% of the population suffers from hyperhidrosis; however, many may not know that it is treatable. Many people who have hyperhidrosis sweat excessively from one or two areas of the body. The underarms are most affected, but it can also affect the palms and the feet. Excessive sweating may interfere with everyday activities and negatively affects work and social life.

What is the difference between normal sweating and hyperhidrosis?

Sweating is a normal process preventing the body from overheating and occurs in response to warm temperatures, nervousness, or exercise.  Excessive sweating is an increase in the amount of sweat, usually occurring in the underarms, palms, or feet, while the rest of the body is dry.  It occurs for no apparent reason and maybe worse when it is hot or when someone is nervous.  The amount of sweat interferes with everyday activities and is a source of embarrassment as it soaks clothing and is visible.

How does Botox work for Hyperhidrosis?

Botox is FDA approved treatment for hyperhidrosis of the underarms. It is a safe and effective treatment that offers quick, dramatic results. To treat excessive sweating, the patient will have tiny amounts of Botox injected over the area of the underarms. The injections temporarily block the chemical in the body that stimulates the sweat glands. Most patients notice results 4-5 days after receiving treatment. Patients will experience reduced sweating the lasts about 6-9 months and sometimes longer. When excessive sweating returns, they can be re-treated.

Am I a candidate for Hyperhidrosis treatment with Botox?

If you feel that sweat drips excessively from the underarms, causes embarrassment, is getting in the way of your work and social life, and you have tried antiperspirants and other prescription medications that have not been effective, you may be a candidate for Botox for hyperhidrosis.
