We’re nearly a third of the way through winter and many people are experiencing dry, itchy skin. That’s why the physicians at Affiliated Dermatology are sharing effective ways to help your skin feel and look better.


A long, hot shower may sound like the perfect recipe on a cold morning, but too much hot water can strip away skin’s natural oils. Try lukewarm instead and limit showers to ten minutes. Immediately after bathing, pat skin dry and apply moisturizer to lock in water.


Apply beeswax or petroleum jelly regularly to prevent and treat chapped lips. Avoid licking your lips.


It’s not just cold weather that can dry our hands- it’s also the frequent use of sanitizer and washing to avoid cold and flu germs. Use a glycerin-based moisturizer.


Dry skin often causes cracked heels. Try coating them with petroleum jelly, covering them in plastic wrap, and wearing socks overnight.


Winter skin may need a heavier, daily moisturizer. Some people may want to skip anti-aging moisturizers that contain retinoids because they may aggravate already dry skin. To get the most out of your moisturizer be sure to exfoliate to remove dry, dead skin cells. If your skin is sensitive consider consulting a dermatologist.


This is a must year-round. Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day.

Stay hydrated

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Lack of water leads to dry, tight skin which is more prone to wrinkles.
